CRISIS: Abortion Under Attack

HEALTH EDUCATION & PREVENTION
When SisterLove, Inc. was launched, our mission was focused on providing preventative education and outreach to women of color in the metropolitan Atlanta area.
What we learned along the way from women infected with HIV and those struggling to make life-affirming choices prompted us, in later years, to expand our mission and meet the needs of transgender and gender-variant individuals, and lesbian, bisexual, gay, and queer-identified youth, women, and men.
Our current mission addresses a broader range of needs and concerns and we remain strong in our belief that preventative education and outreach are vitally important in the fight against HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STI).

“I was referred to SisterLove through a mutual friend. I have always been uneasy with any kind of testing. When I tested at another office I felt like I was judged by the staff. I made up my mind that I would try a new place. The staff at SisterLove was very nice and friendly and all my uneasiness went away. As I talked with the counselor, I felt like she knew where I was coming from and I didn’t feel as if she was judging me. I learned so much on that visit that I wanted to share my experience with all my friends.”

About 1 in 7 people in the United States have HIV and don’t know it.
One of HEAP’s primary functions is free HIV/STI testing and risk reduction counseling. Being tested is the only way anyone knows for sure if they have HIV or STIs. The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as a part of routine healthcare.
